Come sei venuto a conoscenza del Carnevale di Ivrea?
Allora, ho preso parte all’episodio pilota per un tv show organizzato da Red Bull Media House dal nome “Games of Strange” (tradotto ‘Giochi Strani’), il cui scopo principale era quello di visitare le più bizzarre manifestazioni sparse in giro per il mondo. Uno dei produttori esecutivi aveva origini italiane, conosceva questa manifestazione e ce ne ha parlato; così abbiamo pensato che sarebbe stato il luogo perfetto per iniziare lo show “Games of Strange.”

How did you find out about the Carnival of Ivrea?
So I was part of a production pilot for Redbull media house for a show called “games of strange” the concept was to visit the “strangest” festivals around the world. One of the executive producers is half Italian and he had always wanted to visit the festival, so we thought it would be the perfect place for our pilot episode!
Che tipo di atmosfera hai “respirato”?
L’atmosfera che ho respirato prima dell’inizio della battaglia è stata molto amichevole, penso che tutti i partecipanti siano molto orgogliosi di prenderne parte. Quando è iniziata la battaglia poi è stato pazzesco, sembrava di stare davvero in mezzo a una guerra.
Anche tu hai avuto una “Medaglia”? (ovvero sei stato colpito dal tiro delle arance? ti sei fatto male?)
Ahah per fortuna non mi sono rotto nulla, ma ricordo che ero abbastanza ammaccato dopo la battaglia. Ho preso molti colpi in faccia, soprattutto dopo un testa a testa con un arancere sopra al carro.
Hai capito il senso del Carnevale di Ivrea e del perchè ci tiriamo le arance?
Devo dire che siamo stati fortunati ad avere una guida locale che sembrava essere la regina della manifestazione, sapeva davvero ogni cosa riguardante il Carnevale. Ci ha spiegato la storia della rivolta partita dalla figlia del mugnaio che ha compiuto un gesto eroico liberando il popolo dalla tirannia. Una storia piuttosto raccapricciante, ma sicuramente è una storia di cui il popolo deve essere orgoglioso per la propria libertà, e forse anche per le prime radici del movimento femminista.
What kind of atmosphere did you “breathe”?
The atmosphere in the run up to the actual start of the battle was really friendly, everyone was so proud of the history of the event. Then when the actual battle started it was amazing, almost like a really battle.
Are you also had a “Medal”? (or have you been hit by the shot of the oranges? have you hurt yourself?)
Haha, I don’t break anything but I was fairly bruised after the battle! I had many direct hits in my face , especially after the “tete a tete” with one of the knights on the cart!
Did you understand the meaning of the Ivrea Carnival and why do we throw oranges?
We were lucky enough to have a local guide who seemed to be the queen of the festival! She explained the history behind the uprising of the people after the millers daughter cut off the dukes head! A pretty gruesome tale , but definitely a proud history of freedom fighting and maybe even the roots of the feminist movement!
Hai mai partecipato ad eventi più strani e particolari di questo?
Assolutamente no.
Come è nata l’idea da parte tua e di Red Bull Tv di partecipare all’evento? Eri solo o accompagnato da altri tuoi colleghi/amici? Che emozioni hanno provato loro?
Eravamo un gruppo di 5 persone: un direttore, un cameraman, due produttori ed io. Tutti abbiamo sentito il sangue scorrerci nelle vene per l’eccitazione della battaglia. Ad un certo punto abbiamo partecipato tutti e 5 alla battaglia ed è stato epico!

Have you ever taken part in any stranger and more particular events than this?
100% no.
How did the idea for you and Red Bull TV to participate in the event come about? Were you alone or accompanied by your other colleagues / friends? What emotions did they feel?
We were a crew of 5, 1 director, 1 camera man, 2 producers and myself. We all felt the blood rush and excitement of the battle, all of them got into the battle at some point! It was epic!
Would you do it again?
